Portland, Oregon, with a combined metropolitan area population of just over 2.4 Million inhabitants, is currently the 24th largest metropolitan area in the United States.
For anyone who has ever visited Portland, it’s easy to recognize that the residents are fairly laid back, professional, and seem to have a mutual love for the outdoors and outdoor activities.
The number of parks and outdoor activities in Portland are vast, from hiking trails, to camp grounds and mountain climbing.
The Portland Metropolitan area consists of three main counties, Multnomah, Washington, and Clackamas.
Multnomah County is the largest county in population, but actually the smallest county in all of Oregon by area with 466 square miles. Portland is the largest incorporated city within this county, with a population of over 550,000 residents. Multnomah County boarders the Columbia River to its south with the center of downtown Portland positioned in the middle of the county.
Washington County is the second largest county in both the city and the state. Hillsboro is the largest city in the county, with approximately 91,000 residents. High-tech and Washington County are synonymous, creating the nickname, “Silicon Forest.” Tektronix, Intel, HP, Xerox and Epson are just a few of the major IT firms that have a significant amount of employees in this area. Nike headquarters is also located here.
Clackamas County is both the third largest county within the Portland Metropolitan area as well as Oregon, with a population of just over 375,000 residents. The county was named for the Clackamas Indians. Oregon City is the legislative center for the county. Clackamas County is primarily a residential area with fewer industrial areas than the other two major counties of the Portland Metropolitan area.
Portland is home to three professional sports franchises, with the Portland Trail Blazers (Basketball), the Portland Timber’s (Men’s Soccer) and the Portland Thorns (Women’s Soccer). The Portland Timbers gained notoriety by winning the 2015 MLS Cup, the first time in their history and the first professional championship in any sport that a Portland team has one since the Trailblazers win in 1977.
Beautiful City Parks
Forest Park, with some 5000 acres, is the largest park that resides within city limits in the United States. Portland Japanese Garden, consisting of just over 5 acres is generally regarded as one of the well maintained and diverse Japanese gardens in the United States.
Portland is a beautiful and vibrant city. Similar to Fresno, California, it is one of the fastest growing cities in the US, mainly due to the massive influx of hi-tech jobs. Portland is quickly catching up to its big sister to the north, Seattle, WA.
